Abstract

The cinematic depictions of identity that are found in modern independent films, with a particular emphasis on the interplay of sexuality, race, and gender. The use of cinema as a platform to challenge dominant narratives and give more nuanced portrayals of marginalized identities has become increasingly prevalent among independent filmmakers in recent years. This study investigates how independent cinema handles issues of representation, power, and agency by doing so through a critical analysis of selected films. Independent cinema goes beyond depictions that are prevalent in mainstream cinema to offer a variety of perspectives that are genuine and authentic. the role that independent film plays in encouraging social change by showing identities that are multifaceted and intersectional and by highlighting perspectives that are frequently overlooked in mainstream media. As a result of the research, the significance of independent film as a venue for progressive storytelling and cultural expression is brought to light. This is accomplished by exploring the portrayal of gender fluidity, racial dynamics, and LGBTQ+ identities. the ways in which independent films contribute to continuing conversations about identity, representation, and inclusion in a society that is increasingly international and multicultural.
